Catalog Course Description

Provides training opportunities with local community organizations. Students engage directly with various community organizations in order to gain experience with data collection, facilitating meetings, recruiting new members, fund raising, and project management.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Fundamentals of Community Organizing

    a. Review program outcomes in the context of one or more communiting organizations.

  2. Gathering and Analyzing Information and Data

    a. Identify key sources of information relevant to local community organizations.
    b. Compile and present information and data for presentations to local community members.*

  3. Techniques for Effective Meetings

    a. Identify effective methods for leading and facilitatng meetings.
    b. Gather information from meetings for projects and initiatives.
    c. Evaluate and debrief meetings.*

  4. Base Building and Recruitment of Members

    a. Demonstrate effective methods for building relationships with other organizations.*
    b. Demonstrate effective methods for recruitment of new organization members.

  5. Project Management

    a. Demonstrate effective methods for managing projects.
    b. Demonstrate effective methods for evaluating projects.*

  6. Fund Raising

    a. Describe the types and methods of fund raising.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Students will compile weekly documentation of all experiences in the Internship, as they pertain to the course objectives of the Internship. Students will submit reports on the experiences of the Internship involving information and data gathering, effective meetings, base building, project management and fund-raising.
