Catalog Course Description

This course is one in a series of four courses in radiographic positioning and procedures. The course provides instruction in standard imaging procedures for contrast studies of the digestive and the genitourinary tracts. Consideration is given to special radiographic contrast studies. Consideration is also given to the evaluation of optimal diagnostic images.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Contrast Media: Classifications, Methods of Administration, Dosage, Contraindications and Adverse Reactions
  2. Equipment and Technical Considerations
  3. Radiographic Contrast Studies of the Digestive Tract: Esophagus, Stomach, Small Bowel – routine and air contrast, Large Bowel - routine and air contrast
  4. Radiographic Contrast Studies of the Genitourinary Tract: Intravenous Pyelogram, Nephrotomography, and Voiding Cystourethrogram
  5. Special Studies: Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography, Hysterosalpingogram, Arthrography, Myelogram, and Venogram
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Explain the purpose of contrast media.
  2. Name the type, dosage, and route of administration commonly used to perform radiographic contrast and special studies.
  3. Explain the patient preparation for various contrast and special studies.
  4. Demonstrate and describe the correct patient position, part placement, and central ray landmarks for radiographic contrast studies of the following anatomic systems, gastrointestinal and genitourinary.
  5. Describe the correct patient position, part placement, and central ray landmarks for special radiographic contrast studies of the biliary tract, the pancreatic duct, the spinal column, fallopian tubes, joints and veins.
  6. Identify in radiographic images the evaluation criteria for each contrast study image.
  7. Evaluate images for positioning, centering, appropriate anatomy and overall image quality.
