This is second in a sequence of structured, competency based clinical courses in concert with American Society of Radiologic Technologist (ASRT) curriculum and ASRT competencies. Course offers experiences in chart recognition, basic patient assessment, patient communication, and basic departmental procedures and policies. Equipment manipulation, chest, abdomen, upper extremity, lower extremity and shoulder girdle radiographic positioning are emphasized.

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- Explain the basic administrative structure of the hospital system and radiology department.
- Apply radiation protection principles, practices and procedures.
- Prepare the room and patient for a radiographic exam.
- Obtain and record the proper medical history as mandated by the clinical site.
- Assure the patient’s safety during the exam.
- Utilize proper body mechanics when transferring patients.
- Apply universal precautions in the clinical setting.
- Align the x-ray tube and the image receptor accurately to capture the radiographic image.
- Demonstrate correct manipulation of radiographic, fluoroscopic and mobile equipment.
- Identify anatomy in the radiographs submitted for demonstration of competency.
- Adopt all pertinent rules regarding professionalism as mandated by the clinical site.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.
- Maintain competency in previously mastered examinations.
- Demonstrate Competency in at least seven (7) examinations which may include: lower extremity, hip, pelvis, clavicle, scapula, shoulder, Acromioclavicular (AC) joints, and contrast studies – gastrointestinal, genitourinary or other.
- Complete Procedure tests under the supervision of a Clinical Instructor to include: elbow, humerus, calcaneus, tibia/fibula, knee – AP portable and cross-table lateral, scapula, shoulder routine, shoulder scapular Y and shoulder inferosuperior axial.
Assessment and Requirements
The final course grade will be calculated using a combination of tests, quizzes, assignments, presentations and participation.
Must obtain a grade of “C” or better to remain in the Radiography program.
