Catalog Course Description

The third course in a sequence of structured, competency based, clinical courses offering experiences in chart recognition, patient assessment, patient communication, equipment manipulation, and chest, abdomen, lower extremity, upper extremity, shoulder, and pelvis radiographic positioning.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. In concert with American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Curriculum and American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) competencies: Continued development of radiographic and mobile equipment skills.
  2. Continued performance of mastered clinical competencies.
  3. Introductory trauma radiography.
  4. Shoulder girdle and pelvic girdle positioning.
Detailed Learning Objectives (Optional)
  1. Assess and apply radiation protection principles, practices, and procedures.
  2. Properly prepare the x-ray room and patient for a radiographic exam.
  3. Collect and record the proper medical history as mandated by the clinical site.
  4. Assure the patient’s safety during the exam.
  5. Demonstrate the use of proper body mechanics when transferring patients.
  6. Demonstrate the use of universal precautions in the clinical setting.
  7. Demonstrate accurate alignment of the x-ray tube and the image receptor to capture the radiographic image.
  8. Differentiate anatomy in the radiographs submitted for demonstration of competency.
  9. Demonstrate all pertinent rules regarding professionalism as mandated by the clinical site.
  10. Adopt patient confidentiality standards.
  11. Demonstrate the maintenance of competency in previously mastered examinations.
  12. Complete Competency Tests in at least fourteen (14) examinations which may include the following: chest, abdomen, upper extremities, lower extremities, shoulder girdle, portable hip, and trauma hip.
  13. Complete the following Procedure Tests under the supervision of a Clinical Instructor: femur and hip, anteroposterior (AP) portable hip, and trauma axiolateral cross table hip.
  14. During two weeks of afternoon clinical rotations: modify radiographic examinations for trauma patients and conduct trauma radiographic examinations under direct supervision.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment is based on student performance during Competency and Procedures Examinations, week clinical staff evaluations, and student attendance.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

Must obtain a grade of “C” or better to remain in the Radiography program.
