Catalog Course Description

This is fifth in a sequence of structured, competency based clinical courses in concert with American Society of Radiologic Technologist (ASRT) curriculum and American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) competencies. Course emphasizes headword including skull, facial bones, paranasal sinuses, and increasing technical proficiency in all previously covered radiographic procedures. Students will continue to develop trauma radiography skills and advanced mobile radiography skills.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)

Upon successful completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Apply radiation protection principles, practices and procedures.
  2. Prepare the room and patient for a radiographic exam.
  3. Obtain and record the proper medical history as mandated by the clinical site.
  4. Assure the patient’s safety during the exam.
  5. Utilize proper body mechanics when transferring patients.
  6. Apply universal precautions in the clinical setting.
  7. Align the x-ray tube and the image receptor accurately to capture the radiographic image.
  8. Identify anatomy in the radiographs submitted for demonstration of competency.
  9. Adopt pertinent rules regarding professionalism as mandated by the clinical site.
  10. Maintain patient confidentiality.
  11. Maintain competency in previously mastered examinations.
  12. Complete Competency Tests on at least fifteen (15) examinations.
  13. Complete Procedure Tests under the supervision of a Clinical Instructor to include mandible and sinuses.
  14. Apply previously mastered clinical skills to non-routine patients.
  15. Analyze, organize, and efficiently perform multiple radiographic examinations on a single patient.
  16. Modify radiographic examinations for trauma patients.
  17. Conduct trauma radiographic examinations with confidence and ease under indirect supervision.
  18. Produce quality radiographic images with appropriate program exit level clinical competency.
  19. Demonstrate clinical competency by completing a minimum of five (5) exit practical competency rechecks from the following categories: chest, abdomen, upper extremity, lower extremity, vertebral column, cranium, contrast examination, portable examination, and cystourethrography examination.
  20. Demonstrate program exit level competency by successfully completing exit practical and written scenario tests.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will include a combination of tests, quizzes, assignments, presentations and participation.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

Students must receive a grade of “C” or better to remain in the RAD program.
