Catalog Course Description

This is sixth in a sequence of structured, competency based clinical courses emphasizing final mastery of all aspects of professional, entry level radiologic technology. Structured clinical experiences are offered in selected specialty rotations which may include Ultrasound, Computed Tomography, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Radiation Therapy, Mammography, and Positron Emission Tomography.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)

Upon successful completion of this course, the students should be able to:

  1. Apply radiation protection principles, practices, and procedures.
  2. Prepare the room and patient for a radiographic exam.
  3. Record the proper medical history as mandated by the clinical site.
  4. Assure the patient’s safety during the exam.
  5. Use proper body mechanics when transferring patients.
  6. Use universal precautions in the clinical setting.
  7. Align the x-ray tube and the image receptor accurately to capture the radiographic image.
  8. Identify anatomy in the radiographs submitted for demonstration of competency.
  9. Adopt pertinent rules regarding professionalism as mandated by the clinical site.
  10. Maintain patient confidentiality.
  11. Demonstrate continued competency in previously mastered examinations.
  12. Explain the basic principles of the specialty imaging rotation chosen by student.
  13. Demonstrate Competency in at least eight (8) examinations.
  14. Apply previously mastered clinical skills to non-routine patients.
  15. Analyze, organize, and perform efficient multiple radiographic examinations on a single patient.
  16. Produce quality radiographic images with appropriate program exit level clinical competency.
  17. Demonstrate clinical competency by completing a minimum of five (5) exit practical competency rechecks from the following nine categories: chest, abdomen, upper extremity, lower extremity, vertebral column, cranial examination, contrast examination, portable examination, and cysto examination.
  18. Demonstrate program exit level clinical competency by successfully completing exit practical and written scenario test outs.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will include a combination of tests, quizzes, assignments, presentations and participation.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

Students must receive a grade of “C” or better to remain in the RAD program.
