Selected experience in health care facilities for clinical practice with oxygen delivery systems and basic patient assessment techniques.

  1. Describe standard precautions required in the patient care setting.
  2. Describe infection control procedures required in the patient care setting.
  3. Utilize standard precautions and infection control procedures in the clinical setting.
  4. Delineate Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines used in the patient care setting.
  5. Demonstrate compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines when dealing with patients and their medical records in the health care setting.
  6. Demonstrate appropriate professional behaviors when dealing with physicians, hospital staff, fellow students, patients, and patient families.
  7. Assess a patient’s medical record to extract pertinent information.
  8. Correlate learned theory and techniques to direct patient care included in an oxygen rounds assignment. (i.e. indications for oxygen therapy, equipment, monitoring patients on oxygen, etc.)
  9. Obtain accurate measurements of pulse, pulse oximetry, and respiratory rate utilizing correct technique.
  10. Obtain basic patient assessment findings.
  11. Recommend oxygen therapy changes based on findings of basic patient assessment.
  12. Communicate verbally in language appropriate to patients and professional staff.
  13. Communicate appropriately and accurately in written form in appropriate notes and reports.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Written documentation, observation of clinical practice, weekly clinical logs, shared feedback forms, physician interaction reports, affective final evaluation, and clinical competency evaluations are used to assess attainment of objectives in the area of knowledge, skills, and affective behaviors.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

Students must pass this course with a "C" or better to remain in the Respiratory Therapist program.
