Catalog Course Description

A study of the current theory and techniques encountered by the respiratory therapist in a variety of clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on advanced ventilator applications, advanced cardiopulmonary monitoring, pulmonary rehabilitation, smoking cessation and the respiratory care professional’s dynamic role in the health care setting.

  1. Identify the electrocardiograpph(ECG) pattern fro each of the arrhythmias required in the study of American Heart Association(AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  2. Describe the use of drug therapy, pacemakers, and defibrillators in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias.
  3. Discuss the importance of cardiopulmonary homeostasis.
  4. Describe the hemodynamic principles of the cardiovascular system.
  5. Explain the components of the Pulmonary Artery Catheter, its indications and complications.
  6. Explain the importance of the measurements obtained and derived from the PAP catheter.
  7. Interpret hemodynamic calculations.
  8. Discuss pharmacological influences on hemodynamic parameters.
  9. Discuss a variety of pharmacological agents influence on the cardiopulmonary system.
  10. Recommend a therapeutic plan based on a patient’s hemodynamic status.
  11. Describe the goals and objectives pulmonary rehabilitation aims to achieve.
  12. Discuss the indications, contraindications, and hazards associated with pulmonary rehabilitation.
  13. Describe the evaluation and selection process of patients to a pulmonary rehabilitation program.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will be based on assignments, project, course exams, NBRC Self-Assessment Exams and a final exam.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

This course includes the NBRC self assessment exit examinations that must be passed to successfully complete this course. All RTH courses must be completed with a "C" grade or higher.
