Catalog Course Description

Development of the clinical skills related to airway management, bronchial hygiene, resuscitation procedures, and oxygenation. Students evaluate, modify, and monitor patients' responses to respiratory care regimens. A seven-week directed clinical experience in selected clinical sites.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Select the proper mode of administration, and set-up and assure proper function of the selected oxygen delivery device.
  2. Monitor the patient’s response to the prescribed oxygen therapy, and recommend changes in the approach taken according to individual patient needs.
  3. Evaluate a patient’s oxygenation and ventilator status through the use of patient assessment skills, pulmonary mechanics, pulse oximetry, and/or arterial blood gas (ABG) results.
  4. Recommend the appropriate aerosol and/or bronchodilator therapy.
  5. Deliver aerosol and/or bronchodilator therapy according to departmental procedure.
  6. Monitor the patient’s response and alter the aerosol and/or bronchodilator treatment regimen according to the individual patient needs.
  7. Recommend the appropriate bronchial hygiene therapy.
  8. Deliver bronchial hygiene therapy according to departmental procedure.
  9. Monitor the patient’s response, and alter the bronchial hygiene therapy according to the individual patient needs.
  10. Recommend the appropriate lung expansion therapy.
  11. Deliver lung expansion therapy according to departmental procedure.
  12. Monitor the patient’s response, and alter the lung expansion therapy according to the individual patient needs.
  13. Provide emergency care, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), or some portion of CPR as required in the clinical situation.
  14. Demonstrate the proper procedure for obtaining an arterial blood sample through arterial puncture.
  15. Incorporate the general floor respiratory care techniques during a typical shift assignment.
  16. Demonstrate compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines when dealing with patients and their medical records in the health care setting.
  17. Apply appropriate professional behaviors when dealing with physicians, hospital staff, fellow students, patients, and patient families.
  18. Utilize standard precautions and infection control procedures in the clinical setting.
  19. Communicate verbally in language appropriate to patients and professional staff.
  20. Communicate appropriately and accurately in written form in appropriate notes and reports.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Written documentation, observation of clinical practice, weekly clinical logs, shared feedback forms, affective final evaluation, and clinical competency evaluations assessing students in the areas of knowledge, skills, and affective behavior are used to assess attainment of objectives.
