Catalog Course Description

The purpose of Leadership in Diverse Communities and Organizations is to examine and assess the intricacies of traditional leadership praxis and the complexity of leading non-traditional organizations. While the course addresses traditional leadership theories, it also identifies innovative theories and approaches that acknowledge and value the multiplicity of social capital all shareholders bring to an organization. Additionally, the sociological perspective is employed to enable students to critically view their own lived experiences as framework from which to critically assess issues of equity and privilege.

  1. Leadership and Team Building
    • Explain basic principles and practices of leadership.
    • Describe models and theories from non-profit, private and government sectors.
    • Apply principles of leadership, including vision, motivation, and emotional intelligence.
    • Describe competencies of goal setting, risk-taking, ethics, in community change.
    • Integrate personal experience and beliefs with current research and practice.
  2. Power and Power Mapping
    • Describe the various types of power.
    • Demonstrate techniques of power analysis.
    • Complete a power map for a specific area or issue.
    • Conduct a classroom demonstration of power mapping.
  3. Communication Skills
    • Utilize effective verbal and written communication.
    • Employ public speaking skills in presentations.
    • Display cultural competencies communication styles and methods.
  4. Organizational Devleopment and Leadership
    • Assess resource development needs in communities and organizations.
    • Describe fund-making methods.
    • Describe strategic planning methods.
    • Conduct an elementary SWOT analysis
  5. Pre-Practicum Research
    • Design a model action campaign.
