Catalog Course Description

Designed to continue to develop the concepts from SRG-101. It features general, gynecology, genitourinary, orthopedic, otorhinolaryngology, and endoscopy surgical procedures. The course also emphasizes the scheme or steps as well as the instrumentation of these surgical interventions. One or two half day operating room (OR) observations are required.

  1. Describe the surgical patient as a person.
  2. Differentiate the abdominal incisions and closures.
  3. Summarize the perioperative care of the surgical patient.
  4. Describe the appropriate regional anatomy.
  5. Identify surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment used for: general, gynecology, genitourinary, orthopedics, otorhinolaryngology, and endoscopy procedures.
  6. Describe the schemes or steps of common surgical procedures within each covered specialty.
  7. Explain the possible complications and preventions in these surgical specialties.
  8. Describe and apply the principles for creating and maintaining the sterile field and the principles of draping the surgical patient.
  9. Describe the immediate pre-operative and post-operative care of the patient.
  10. Explain productivity during set-up and scrubbing of surgical procedures.
  11. Analyze and apply the use of related specialty items.
  12. Identify the intraoperative requirements for the basic procedures, including the necessary supplies, equipment, and their uses.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will include unit exams, quizzes, Operating Room (OR) observation assignments, and a cumulative final.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations
  • Students must pass this course with a “C” or better grade to remain in the Surgical Technologist Program.
  • Students must follow all classroom/clinical policies described in the most current Surgical Technologist Program Student Handbook.
  • Students are required to wear HFC navy scrubs for all SRG lab classes.
