Catalog Course Description

Students will identify and discuss advanced surgical procedures focusing upon trauma, transplants, major orthopedic procedures, and the basic principles in the application of robotics in surgery. Electrical elements/concerns in the operating room will be discussed. All-Hazard Preparation will be discussed. The course will also emphasize the elements of professional development including professional organizations, leadership, teamwork, certification and continuing education. Students will discuss the role of the AST and its impact upon careers in surgical technology. Employability skills will be reviewed and applied. Students will be introduced to techniques and exercises in preparation for the national Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) exam. Written and oral presentations by the students are key elements of this course. NOTE: All students will be required to sit for the NBSTSA - CST exam as part of this course.

  1. Apply the advanced surgical concepts used within the surgical setting, especially in more advanced surgical procedures.
  2. Apply the basic concepts and terminology for robotics, and electricity as they pertain to the safe care of the patient in the OR.
  3. Describe All-Hazard Preparation and the related competency domains.
  4. Define personal and professional relationships with others on the surgical team.
  5. List professional organizations related to surgery.
  6. Prepare a resume and identify techniques to keep it current.
  7. Apply factors that will increase job-seeking skills.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

This is a seminar style course. Assessment of academic achievement will include a combination of class participation, assignments, and presentations.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

A minimum grade of 80% is required to pass this course.
