Catalog Course Description

This course is 24 hours per week of field experience. Field experience will provide students the opportunity to learn at a cooperating mental health agency, under the guidance of a licensed professional, for 360 clock hours of off-campus learning for 15 weeks. This course is an introduction to the clinical environment, giving students the opportunity to apply social work principles and interventions appropriate for a social work technician.

Goal Statement

Students will develop the knowledge and skills to work at a social work technician.

Core Course Topics
  1. Professional and Ethical Behavior

    Students will apply social work values, ethics and principles according to the NASW Code of Ethics, in interactions within the clinical setting

  2. Scope of Practice

    Students will practice within the scope of training and education.
    Students will describe the environments and social service delivery practice and context in which intervention occurs.
    Students will implement services that are appropriate to the social work technician practice.

  3. Basic Social Work Skills

    Students will work, under the supervision of a licensed professional, with individuals, families, and in-group dynamics such as completing a biopsychosocial intake through oral interview and records.
    Students will apply basic social work skills and techniques to engage, assess, and/or intervene at the micro, mezzo, and macro levels.

  4. Diversity and Inclusion

    Students will work with clients who are diverse in ethnicity, culture, gender, social class, mental and physical disabilities, and sexual orientation.
    Students will advocate for clients within a culturally competent framework.
    Students will describe the importance of diversity in the delivery of social work services.

  5. Assessment and Referral

    Students will utilize available community resources to assist clients based on the ecosystem, mezzo, micro, and macro.

  6. Communication Skills

    Students will demostrate professional verbal and written communication with patients and professional staff.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

The student must earn at least 70% overall in the class to earn a C grade.
Grade will be based upon submission of weekly schedules, signed logs, clinical site supervisor evaluations, assignments and a final exit interview.
