Catalog Course Description

Covers the fundamentals of commercial wiring, especially the aspects of the National Electrical Code that specifically apply to commercial construction and repairs. Discusses electrical supplies, hardware appropriate for commercial applications, and commercial wiring techniques. The method of instruction is classroom lecture utilizing PowerPoint presentations.

  1. Commercial blueprint reading.
  2. Commercial branch circuit distribution.
  3. Electrical grounding in commercial applications.
  4. Motor controls in commercial equipment.
  5. Overcurrent protection in commercial wiring (fuses, circuit breakers, ground fault protection).
  6. Conductor sizing.
  7. Power factor correction.

  1. Explain the significance of the National Electrical Code and how it governs commercial installations.
  2. Identify the functions and components of a unit substation.
  3. Describe the components of a busway and its methods of support.
  4. Explain the different types of wire insulation and their applications.
  5. Use the appropriate wire table to determine conductor sizes.
  6. Determine the ampere rating of various motors using the NEC.
  7. Define and use the concept of power factor.
  8. Describe the operation of circuit breakers, fuses, and ground-fault protective devices.
  9. List the important considerations in lamp selection for site lighting.
  10. Identify the different classes, divisions, and groups of hazardous locations.
  11. Troubleshoot a circuit fault utilizing electrical drawings.
  12. Lay out an commercial installation utilizing electrical drawings.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Tests will be given throughout the semester. Tests represent 30% of the course grade.
  2. A mid-term exam will be given which will represent 30% of the course grade.
  3. A final exam will be given which will represent 40% of the course grade.
