Catalog Course Description
An introductory course, appropriate for all trades, which uses practical concepts and examples to examine fluid power, electricity, mechanical power transfer, and rigging. Emphasizes appropriate safety procedures and protocols.

- Introduction to fluid power.
- Hydraulics.
- Pneumatics.
- Introduction to electricity.
- Electricity DC & measuring instruments.
- Electricity AC & circuits.
- Introduction to mechanical power transmission (MPT), anti-friction bearings, and couplings.
- Chain drives and V-belt drives.
- Gear drives.
- Introduction to rigging and selection of lifting devices.
- Selection of attachments.
- Interpretation of rigging capacity charts and tags, inspection of equipment, safety considerations, and hoists.
- Hand signals.
- Calculations & safety.

Assessment and Requirements
Assessment of Academic Achievement
All students will be required to complete five tests: one for calculations, one for fluid power, one for electricity, one for rigging, and one for mechanical power transmission. The student will be considered to have completed the course by receiving a cumulative average grade of 70%.
General Course Requirements and Recommendations
Calculator Use: Students are encouraged to bring a calculator to all class sessions. Any scientific calculator will be sufficient for this course.
