Catalog Course Description

Provides field experience in an advanced manufacturing mechatronics environment with students working a minimum of four hours per week throughout the 15 week semester. Offers first-hand the activities, work-practices, and procedures of mechatronics maintenance personnel. Intended for those who have never worked in, or been exposed to, mechatronic manufacturing maintenance in an industrial production facility. Students will work with the divisional faculty/staff to identify field placements.

Core Course Topics
  1. The facility design – i.e. Mass production, Job shop
  2. Plant specific maintenance tasks and procedures
  3. Types of mechatronic equipment/systems used in production
  4. Mechatronic relationships (systems approach) i.e. electro-pneumatic, mechanical-hydraulic
  5. Organizational maintenance practices

  1. Identify the facility operational style.*
  2. Identify the product created.*
  3. Explain the maintenance requirements of the facility.
  4. Identify the machinery used in the facility.*
  5. Explain the mechatronic relationships of the operational systems.*

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

The instructor and facilities supervisor or maintenance mentor will assess the student based upon his/her projects/work. This will include an assessment of the student’s demonstrated interest and willingness to learn and any contributions made to the in-plant maintenance team. A 500-word essay related to the student’s experience will be required. The student will also research and deliver a 15-minute presentation on a maintenance issue within the facility.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

This course will give the learner experience in the mechatronic manufacturing maintenance arena.
