Catalog Course Description

Discusses the calculation of standard American National, United States V, Metric, Acme, and Worm screw threads. Covers standard notations and formulas for spur gears, bevel gears, worm and worm wheels, and helical gears. Also explains replacement of spur gears with helical gears, the use of idler gears, and discusses calculations for plain and differential indexing.

  • Solve problems involving standard screw threads using standard notation and formulas.
  • Solve gear ratio problems.*
  • Assemble a gearbox involving spur gears.
  • Assemble a gearbox involving bevel gears.
  • Assemble a gearbox involving worm gears.
  • Calculate and replace a spur gear set with a bevel gear set.*
  • Solve problems involving duplication of gears, shaft angles of less than or greater than 90 degrees and replacing spur gears with helical gears.*
  • Inspect a gearbox for wear and damage.*

    Assessment of Academic Achievement

    All students will be required to complete a comprehensive final examination that assesses the learning of all course objectives.  This exam must be weighted in a manner so that this exam score is worth a minimum of fifteen percent of the final course grade.  This exam is to be a common exam administered to all sections of TAMT 260.

    General Course Requirements and Recommendations

    Calculator Use:  Students are encouraged to bring a calculator to all class sessions.  Any scientific calculator will be sufficient for this course.
