Catalog Course Description

Explains the development of the proper procedures for the sizing, selection, and installation of pipe and fittings. Includes the development of pipe welding templates and bending of tubing and pipe.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Orientation, course review, math refresher, and piping pointers.
  2. Pipe measuring methods, fitting take-off.
  3. 45-degree offsets, overview of piping systems.
  4. Threading pipe and metallic piping materials in a pipe threading lab.
  5. Nonmetallic piping.
  6. Tubing, metallic, and nonmetallic in a tubing lab.
  7. Hoses.
  8. Pipe fittings in a copper soldering lab.
  9. Common valves, design, and application.
  10. Special valves, design, and application in a valve repack lab.
  11. Strainers, filters, and traps in a PVC pipe lab.
  12. Piping accessories.
  13. Cross connection control and backflow prevention.
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  • Explain the safety practices for bending, cutting, and installing pipe and tubing.
  • Describe the procedures for laying out pipe for cutting.*
  • Describe and practice the necessary calculations for correctly sizing pipe.*
  • Describe, discuss, and perform the necessary calculations to determine cut size of various pipe materials.*
  • Describe the proper procedures for cutting pipe with hand and power tools.
  • Describe and demonstrate the proper procedures for bending pipe and tubing.
  • Solve practical shop exercises in the bending of pipe and tubing.*

    Assessment of Academic Achievement

    All students will be required to complete a comprehensive final examination that assesses  the learning of all course objectives. This exam must be weighted in a manner so that this exam score is worth a minimum of fifteen percent of the final course grade.  This exam is to be a common exam administered to all sections of TAPP 100.
