Introduces the principles of steam and hydronic heating systems. Covers proper sizing and selection of converters, traps, and boilers.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Principles of heat flow in a building and use and application of heat charts and formulas.
  2. Heat loss calculations.
  3. Planning a heating systems.
  4. Steam heating systems, one-pipe, two-pipe and vacuum systems, and steam traps.
  5. Steam heating system design and placement of pipe and specific connections.
  6. Class project-steam heating design.
  7. Hot water heating systems, direct-return, reverse-return, and air control and vents.
  8. Radiant panel heating panels, hot water boilers, and controls.
  9. Boiler fitting, valves, steam gauges, injectors, and relief valves.
  10. Design of a radiant heat system.
  11. Series loop and one zone system.
  12. One pipe system.
  13. Two pipe reverse return system.

  • Describe and discuss the principles of heat loss in a structure.
  • Identify the difference between steam and hot water systems.
  • Identify the procedures for laying out functioning heating systems.*
  • Identify when to choose one type of system over another.
  • Review the different types of systems according to their pipe arrangements.
  • Identify and discuss the required safety equipment on boilers and furnaces.*
  • Design and layout steam and hydronic systems.*
  • Identify the proper safety procedures for working around boilers and furnaces.

    Assessment of Academic Achievement

    All students will be required to complete a comprehensive final examination that assesses  the learning of all course objectives. This exam must be weighted in a manner so that this exam score is worth a minimum of 15 percent of the final course grade.  This exam is to be a common exam administered to all sections of TAPP 120.
