Introduces the principles of steam and hydronic heating systems. Covers proper sizing and selection of converters, traps, and boilers.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
Core Course Topics
- Principles of heat flow in a building and use and application of heat charts and formulas.
- Heat loss calculations.
- Planning a heating systems.
- Steam heating systems, one-pipe, two-pipe and vacuum systems, and steam traps.
- Steam heating system design and placement of pipe and specific connections.
- Class project-steam heating design.
- Hot water heating systems, direct-return, reverse-return, and air control and vents.
- Radiant panel heating panels, hot water boilers, and controls.
- Boiler fitting, valves, steam gauges, injectors, and relief valves.
- Design of a radiant heat system.
- Series loop and one zone system.
- One pipe system.
- Two pipe reverse return system.

Assessment and Requirements
Assessment of Academic Achievement
All students will be required to complete a comprehensive final examination that assesses the learning of all course objectives. This exam must be weighted in a manner so that this exam score is worth a minimum of 15 percent of the final course grade. This exam is to be a common exam administered to all sections of TAPP 120.
