Catalog Course Description

Focuses on the clinical application of lactation concepts to breastfeeding mothers. Select experiences in health care facilities enable students to assess, develop, implement and evaluate the care of the breastfeeding dyad. The course requires 250 hours in the health care setting and is designed for those without prior lactation teaching experience. Pathway 3 is designed for non health care providers, please see an adviser for details.

  1. Demonstrate professionalism in the healthcare setting.
  2. Demonstrate effective written and oral communication including documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
  3. Apply ethical and legal principles and culturally competent care in the healthcare setting.
  4. Discuss the Birthing Center Workflow.
  5. Discuss WHO code related to the Code of Breastmilk substitutes.
  6. Demonstrate proper breastfeeding positions and use of breastfeeding equipment.
  7. Demonstrate the proper method for manual expression.
  8. Use LATCH score to assess breastfeeding dyad.
  9. Discuss why an alternative feeding method is chosen.
  10. Demonstrate proper use of alternative feeding methods.
  11. Describe early feeding expectations of the newborn.
  12. Develop and implement a feeding plan for breastfeeding dyad.
  13. Explain reasons for breastpump use and the steps necessary for effective pumping.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Clinical evaluations, clinical attendance, student documentation, etc will be used to assess student academic achievement and psychomotor skills.
