Catalog Course Description

Covers the fundamentals of computer literacy with an emphasis on software usage. Offers hands-on training in Microsoft Office including word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Basic Microsoft Windows Features
    • Organize and copy files.
    • Operate application programs in the Microsoft Windows.
  2. World Wide Web and Internet Browser
    • Navigate to web sites using a web browser and search engines.
    • Locate information using appropriate search terms, and download files.
    • Understand computer ethics, netiquette, security, and privacy issues.
  3. E-mail and "Netiquette"
    • Communicate with e-mail.
    • Discuss e-mail name professionalism.
  4. Basic Word Processing Functions
    • Create, save, retrieve, edit, and print a document.*
    • Create a letter and envelope.
    • Use spelling and grammar feature.
    • Use the thesaurus feature to look up synonyms and antonyms.
    • Format a document with various font elements, paragraph indentations, tabs, borders and shading, columns, margins, orientation, line spacing, and horizontal and vertical alignment.
    • Insert and format symbols and graphics (WordArt, ClipArt, Pictures, and AutoShapes).
    • Create bulleted, numbered, and multi-level (outlined) lists.
    • Create and format tables.
  5. Basic Spreadsheet Functions
    • Create, save, retrieve, edit, and print a worksheet.*
    • Format a worksheet using various font elements, shading, borders, and alignments.
    • Create formulas using relative and absolute cell references and isolating assumptions.*
    • Use various functions to evaluate options to support decision making.*
    • Create, modify, and enhance a chart using the Chart Wizard and the Drawing toolbar to create lines, objects, and 3-D shapes.
  6. Basic Presentation Software Functions
    • Create, save, retrieve, edit, and show a presentation.*
    • Apply slide layouts, design themes, transitions, and animation.
    • Insert ClipArt and tables.
    • Use a template to create a presentation.
    • Import an outline.
    • Insert headers and footers.
  7. Computer Security and Privacy Concerns
    • Identify the features of strong passwords.
    • Differentiate phishing e-mails from non-harmful e-mails.
