Prepares students as multi-level service technicians in the refrigeration field. Covers basic refrigeration system design and the components for various domestic, residential, and light commercial systems. Discusses refrigeration system tools, materials, and instruments. Also covers advanced electrical wiring, refrigeration characteristics, charging, evacuation, dehydration, and refrigerant recovery. Course work includes hands-on wiring and circuit troubleshooting related to both mechanical and electrical components. The EPA Section 608 Technician Certification test in refrigerant reclamation is given at the conclusion of the semester.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
Students will become familiar with advanced refrigeration circuit wiring diagrams and then wiring them in the lab setting along with review 608 refrigeration certification; lab hands-on recovery and recharging of refrigeration systems.
- Advanced electrical refrigeration
- Circuit Wiring
- Refrigeration 608 certification
Advanced refrigeration wiring, understanding, and using components in lab wiring and obtaining the 608 Universal Refrigeration Certification handler's card.
- Demonstrate use of air conditioning simple and advanced electrical schematics.
- Identify and prepare pictorial and ladder refrigeration electrical schematics.
- Set up and wire electrical refrigeration diagrams in the laboratory.*
- Demonstrate the purpose of and use of refrigeration gauges.
- Demonstrate familiarity with refrigerant recovery procedures in the lab.
- Demonstrate recharging refrigeration systems in the lab.*
- Complete EPA section 608 certification exam.
For each week's topic, the appropriate unit in the text has been identified. Students should complete the review questions and problems that are assigned to get the maximum benefit from the texts.

Any quizzes and/or homework assignments not completed by the end of the semester will result in an incomplete grade. As as college student, it is your responsibility to complete all assigned tasks. DO NOT count on a lower grade being given in the class when tasks are not completed. Again, an incomplete will be given for the class; so check if you are in doubt. You MUST do all text work as assigned and all review questions to pass. Do NOT procrastinate.
Late homework assignments will lose 5 points -- more deductions for each week that assignments are late. See me if problems are being experienced.
