Catalog Course Description

Introduces the basic rhythms, steps, and simple combinations of tap, a dance form derived from a combination of syncopated African rhythms, Irish clogging, and folk dance. First class meeting discusses proper footwear.

Goal Statement

To be able to correctly identify and execute basic tap steps and rhythms with correct technique.

  1. Vocabulary of basic steps
    • Identify vocabulary of basic steps.
    • Execute basic tap steps with correct technique.
  2. Combinations
    • Execute skill in given combinations and in composing combinations.*
  3. Rhythm and musicality
    • Distinguish among given rhythms.*
    • Execute all steps and combinations with accurate musicality and timing.
  4. Postural Alignment/Weight Changing
    • Execute body alignment exercises and apply to balancing with weight changes.
  5. Famous tap dancers
    • List and explain contributions of selected celebrated tap dancers of the 20th century.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Movement exams: identify vocabulary of steps from given demonstrations; and execute basic tap steps with correct technique and clear sounds.
  2. Movement exam: execute given combinations with clarity and accuracy. Assignment: Compose combinations of steps with clarity.
  3. Written exam: distinguish and identify rhythms from given recordings. Movement exams: execute all steps and combinations with accurate musicality and timing.
  4. Movement exam: illustrate tap sound accuracy through balance in shifting and changing weight.
  5. Assignment: oral, written and video or Power Point presentations of selected famous tap dancers of the 20th century.
