Catalog Course Description

Explores the finer points of Modern Dance. Primary emphasis is on performing advanced movement phrases along with the study and practice of specific Modern Dance techniques. Course also supports the development of choreographic skill and stage presence.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To be able to execute advanced Modern Dance movement with correct technique and skill; develop choreographic skill; and improve stage presence and performance.

Core Course Topics
  1. Advanced Movement Vocabulary
    • Identify advanced Modern Dance movement vocabulary from a demonstration.
  2. Modern Dance Techniques
    • Explain and illustrate skill in selected Modern Dance techniques, e.g. Graham, Limon.
  3. Musicality
    • Execute movement phrases with musicality, accurate rhythm and timing.
  4. Modern Dance Choreographers
    • Explain a Modern Dance choreographer's philosophy; and list and describe their works.
  5. Composition
    • Compose movement phrases, dance studies and sections by employing improvisation and choreographic tools.*
  6. Dance Careers
    • List and explain dance career options.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Written exam: identify movement vocabulary from a demonstration.
  2. Movement exam: Execute with accurate technique given movement phrases. Written exam: Explain given Modern Dance techniques and philosophies.
  3. Movement exam: demonstrate movement phrases with accurate musicality, rhythm and timing.
  4. Classroom presentation: Oral, written and video presentation of selected Modern Dance choreographers.
  5. Classroom assignment/s: Compose movement phrases and/or sections of a dance, given the specific focus or theme.
  6. Classroom assignment: List and explain various dance career options.
