Catalog Course Description
Teaches beginning-level college-preparatory writing and grammar skills for non-native English speakers. Satisfactory completion qualifies students for ELI-103W. This course does not transfer nor count toward degree graduation requirements.

Goal Statement
ELI-102W is designed to help English Language Learners (ELL) acquire beginning-level writing and grammar skills in order to communicate more clearly and accurately in English.

- Formulate simple statements, imperatives, and questions
- Demonstrate appropriate use of capitalization and end punctuation
- Recognize and distinguish count and non-count nouns
- Distinguish between definite and indefinite articles
- Identify and use subject, object, and possessive pronouns
- Formulate sentences using regular and select irregular verbs in the simple past and present; present continuous, and simple future tenses
- Practice and write sentences using correct prepositions of place/time and prepositional phrases
- Demonstrate correct usage of adverbs of place, time, manner, and degree of frequency
- Write sentences using a variety of level-appropriate vocabulary
- Draft, revise, and proofread sentences
- Illustrate evidence of audience awareness
Assessment and Requirements
Assessment of Academic Achievement
Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, assignments, quizzes, tests, and a final exam.
General Course Requirements and Recommendations
In order to progress to the next level, students must:
- Actively participate in at least 80% of all class sessions
- Average 75% or higher on all assignments, quizzes, and tests
- Write at least two graded in-class handwritten writing assignments
- Complete a final exam with an in-class handwritten writing assignment component (worth 25% of their final grade)
