Catalog Course Description

Develops high-beginning-level college communication skills and interactions of non-native English speakers. Satisfactory completion qualifies students for ELI-104C. This course does not transfer nor count toward degree graduation requirements.

ELI-103C is designed to help English Language Learners (ELL) acquire high-beginning-level college communication skills and strategies.

Detailed Learning Objectives (Optional)
  1. Demonstrate and practice American college classroom norms such as taking turns, agreeing/disagreeing, asking for clarification, and participating in groups
  2. Analyze and evaluate speaker attitude
  3. Use academic discourse markers and collocations to express ideas
  4. Practice note-taking skills using guided notes
  5. Prepare and participate in academic discussions and presentations
  6. Practice the use of intonation, prominence, and pausing to create meaning

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, assignments, presentations, individual and/or group projects, and quizzes/tests.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

In order to progress to the next level, students must:

  1. Actively participate in at least 80% of all class sessions
  2. Average 75% or higher on all assignments, presentations, projects, and quizzes/tests
  3. Make a final presentation (worth 25% of the final class grade)
