Catalog Course Description

Develops high-beginning-level college-preparatory writing and grammar skills for non-native English speakers. Satisfactory completion qualifies students for ELI-104W. This course does not transfer nor count toward degree graduation requirements.

ELI-103W is designed to help English Language Learners (ELL) acquire high-beginning-level writing and grammar skills in order to communicate more clearly and accurately in English.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Write simple, compound sentences, and questions
  2. Use appropriate punctuation and capitalization
  3. Use coordinating conjunctions to connect words, phrases, and simple sentences
  4. Use infinitives and gerunds as nouns
  5. Replace nouns with appropriate pronouns based on word order
  6. Write sentences using regular and irregular verbs in the simple past and present; past and present continuous; modals, and future tenses
  7. Use comparative and superlative adverbs and adjectives to describe
  8. Formulate statements, imperatives, and questions
  9. Write complete topic, supporting, and concluding sentences
  10. Use new vocabulary correctly in sentences
  11. Organize sentences in paragraph form
  12. Demonstrate audience awareness in different writing tasks

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, assignments, quizzes, tests, and a final exam.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

In order to progress to the next level, students must:

  1. Actively participate in at least 80% of all class sessions
  2. Average 75% or higher on all assignments, quizzes, and tests
  3. Write at least two graded in-class handwritten writing assignments
  4. Complete a final exam with an in-class handwritten writing assignment component (worth 25% of their final grade)
