Catalog Course Description

Develops intermediate-level college-preparatory reading and study skills for non-native English speakers. Satisfactory completion of this course qualifies students for ELI-106R. This course does not transfer nor count toward degree graduation requirements.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement
ELI-105R is designed to help English Language Learners (ELL) attain intermediate-level reading, listening, and speaking skills in order to understand more clearly and communicate more effectively in English.
Core Course Topics
  1. Reading comprehension strategies including connecting, questioning, predicting, paraphrasing and summarizing
  2. Locating and identifying topics, main ideas, and supporting details in authentic written and audio sources
  3. Author’s or speaker’s message, audience and purpose
  4. Textbook reading strategies, guided note taking, and active learning strategies used with written and audio sources
  5. Vocabulary and idiom study
  6. Academic discussion and presentation skills
  7. American cultural literacy
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Apply a variety of reading comprehension strategies including, but not limited to, connecting, questioning, predicting, paraphrasing and summarizing
  2. Locate and discriminate between topics, main ideas, and supporting details in teacher-selected authentic written and audio fiction and non-fiction texts
  3. Show written and verbal evidence of ability to read and listen critically and analyze the author’s message, audience, and purpose
  4. Show evidence of the ability to use a range of study skills in an American classroom
  5. Illustrate increased vocabulary and idiom knowledge
  6. Design academic presentations and discussions
  7. Demonstrate American cultural literacy

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, assignments, presentations, individual and/or group projects, quizzes, tests, and a departmental exit exam.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

In order to progress to the next level, students must:

  1. Actively participate in at least 80% of all class sessions
  2. Average 75% or higher on all assignments, presentations, projects, quizzes, and tests
  3. Take a departmental exit exam (worth 25% of the final class grade)
