Develops high-intermediate-level college communication skills and interactions of non-native English speakers. Satisfactory completion of this course, along with satisfactory completion of ELI-106R, qualifies students for ELL-182. This course does not transfer nor count toward degree graduation requirements.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
ELI-106C is designed to help English Language Learners (ELL) acquire high-intermediate-level college communication skills and strategies.

- Apply a variety of note-taking strategies
- Express and support a stated position in group discussions and formal presentations
- Predict and evaluate content
- Distinguish between, and make use of, academic discourse markers and collocations to express ideas
- Integrate the use of intonation, prominence, and pausing to create meaning
Assessment and Requirements
Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, assignments, presentations, individual and/or group projects, and quizzes/tests.
In order to progress to the next level, students must:
- Actively participate in at least 80% of all class sessions
- Average 75% or higher on all assignments, presentations, projects, and quizzes/tests
- Make a final presentation (worth 25% of the final class grade)
