Provides practice and preparation for academic writing at the college level. Course work will help students refine academic writing skills, develop confidence in writing, and learn how to meet the demands of writing in diverse contexts. Students are asked to read, think and write in multiple ways in order to prepare them to write at a college level. Students who are required to take this course must earn a grade of S (satisfactory) before enrolling in ENG-131.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
This course will help students prepare themselves for college level writing. Students will learn about and practice the writing process by focusing on prewriting, analysis, idea construction and development, planning, drafting and revision. Students will also explore reading and study skills that will enhance their writing and other academic capabilities.

Assessment and Requirements
All assessment of student writing is based on the above course outcomes and is left to the discretion of the individual instructor. Assessment should focus on student awareness of rhetorical and academic writing skills. Assessment should involve conversation with students about the above learning outcomes.
Students must produce a writing sample within the first two weeks of the course to determine if they are appropriately placed. Instructors must assess this writing sample before the third week of class.
Students must compose at least three structured writing assignments, at least one which will be an academic essay.
Students must practice writing and reading strategies throughout the course. Instructors may choose to assess student practice through journals, homework, portfolios, or other ongoing coursework.
Students must receive some orientation to academic success resources on campus including The Writing Center, The Learning Lab, the Library, and Assisted Learning Services.
Students must attend at least one conference with their instructors.
While instructors may use letter or numerical grades to assess course work, the final grade assigned in English 093 must be S (satisfactory) or U (unsatisfactory). The grade of S shall be given if students successfully complete 75% of the course work.
