Focuses on theory and techniques involved in basic patient assessment using vital signs. Addresses the areas of medical asepsis, standard precautions, proper body mechanics, and patient transportation. Laboratory activities.

At the completion of this course, the student should be able to:

  1. Explain the importance of infection control practices in maintaining the safety of the health care worker and patients.
  2. Identify the preventive procedures included in the Standard Precautions.
  3. Demonstrate proper hand washing procedure.
  4. Describe the terminology used when assessing patient vital signs: body temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, & blood pressure.
  5. Differentiate normal & abnormal values for body temperature, pulse, respiratory rate & blood pressure.
  6. Perform correct measurements of patient vital signs: body temperature, pulse, respiratory rate, & blood pressure.
  7. Discuss proper body mechanics and/or transportation of patients.
