Catalog Course Description

Explains the planning and operation of an athletic or health club facility. Discusses swimming pool operations, the selection and care of exercise and strength equipment, and locker room management.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To prepare the student to operate and/or develop a facility for exercise and sport, including the operation of areas such as a fitness center, swimming pool, tennis courts, spinning room, etc.

  1. Safety Considerations

    Perform a facility/equipment safety check for an exercise facility that is followed regularly.

  2. Emergency Procedures

    Outline emergency procedures a facility must have to respond to emergencies.

  3. Staffing

    Articulate requirements for staff in a fitness facility.

  4. Screening of Members

    Examine protocols for screening participants in exercise programs.

  5. Locker Rooms

    Describe equipment purchase for locker rooms. List safety considerations for locker rooms.

  6. Fitness Center

    Explain important considerations when setting up a fitness center. Create a facility and equipment plan for a fitness center.

  7. Gymnasium

    Elaborate on aspects to consider when operating a gymnasium.

  8. Pool Areas

    Describe maintenance, safety, and requirements for pool areas.

  9. Outdoor Equipment

    Describe equipment that could be used in an outdoor environment to improve fitness. Restate characteristics of an outdoor recreational area.

  10. Child Care Concerns

    Elaborate on child care considerations for a fitness facility.

  11. Liability

    Set up an emergency procedures plan for a facility. Discuss how the American with Disabilities Act impacts on a facility.

  12. Professional organizations

    Know what trade organizations are available to help with the establishment of a sport facility.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Assessment of academic achievement will be identified and implemented by the class instructor. Methods will include, but not be limited to, individual projects, vocabulary, class participation (discussion and critiques), facility project, and tests.
