Catalog Course Description

Introduces major themes and events in World History from the Ancient to the Early Modern Periods through the study of the arts (fine and performing), architecture, literature, religions, and/or philosophies of (selected) World Civilizations.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

To introduce students to great works of World arts, literature, religion, architecture, and/or philosophy in their historical contexts. Emphasis will be on the interconnection of the Humanities and History, as well as the interconnection of the world cultures and civilizations relevant to each theme. The World Civilizations included will vary depending on the theme of the individual class, but inclusion of at least one non-Western Civilization is strongly encouraged.

  1. Major historical events, movements, trends, and figures of World Civilizations
  2. Major artistic, architectural, literary, and philosophical works of World Civilizations
  3. Major religions and religious developments of World Civilizations
  4. The roles of peoples (e.g., tribal peoples) at the periphery of World Civilizations
  5. The relationship between the arts, literature, religious traditions, and philosophies and historical events, movements, and trends
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Identify, describe, and analyze the major historical trends, movements, people, and events of the selected period(s) of World Civilizations.
  2. Identify, describe, and analyze major artistic, architectural, literary, and philosophical works from various World Civilizations from the Ancient to the Early Modern time periods.
  3. Identify, describe, and analyze the religion traditions from various World Civilizations from the Ancient to the Early Modern time periods.
  4. Compare and contrast historical periods or events from two or more time periods or civilizations.
  5. Compare and contrast artistic, architectural, literary, and/or philosophical works from two or more time periods or civilizations.
  6. Compare and contrast religious traditions across two or more time periods and/or civilizations.
  7. Explain how (selected) works of art, architecture, literature, and/or philosophy relate to the historical events and development of their civilizations and time periods.
  8. Explain how peoples at the periphery of the World civilizations (e.g., tribal peoples) have contributed to the development and/or movement of the arts, architecture, philosophy, literature, and/or religious traditions of the world.
  9. Trace and describe the changes in art, architecture, philosophy, and/or religious traditions as they moved through time and space.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Each instructor will determine the assessment methods for her/his course. Multi-genre/multi-media projects are encouraged by the Humanities department.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations
  1. Students should be introduced to at least two major World Civilizations, at least one of them should be a non-Western Civilization, depending on the theme of the class.
  2. Students should be introduced to the major disciplines within the Humanities.
  3. Some form of written assignment is strongly suggested.
  4. A research project focusing on a historical person or event or a work of art, architecture, literature, philosophy, or religious traditions is strongly suggested. This can be the above mentioned assignment.
