Catalog Course Description

A beginning-level piano class where students learn to read and play piano music. Instruction takes place in the HFC Music Technology Lab.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

Piano class is open to any student and is especially intended for those who wish to become vocal or instrumental music teachers, or elementary classroom teachers, and have had little or no keyboard experience. In addition to basic technique, the emphasis is on hand-eye coordination. Ample practice facilities are available in the Music Wing of the MacKenzie Fine Arts Center.

  2. Note reading

  4. Melodies with accompaniment
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  • Perform the ascending and descending C major scale, hands together, one octave
  • Identify and play notes, with and without accidentals, of the treble and bass staves
  • Perform representative technical etude (e.g. Hanon)
  • Demonstrate proper posture and hand/finger position at the piano keyboard
  • Perform representative solo piano piece, from memory
  • Perform simple arrangement of "Happy Birthday" in F major, from memory
