Catalog Course Description

Surveys various musical compositions from the Medieval period through the Twentieth Century, emphasizing the development of listening skills. Provides more in-depth knowledge than MUS-130.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Goal Statement

Emphasis will be placed upon analytical listening of major historical music styles from Gregorian Chant, along with the forms of the Classical and Romantic periods.

  • Identify titles and composers of selected works in the following periods: Early Music (Chant, Medeival, Renaissance), Baroque, Classical, Early Romantic, Late Romantic, 20th Century.
  • Place composers in their time period.
  • Distinguish among styles of various musical periods.
  • Determine thematic materials by analyzing pieces for patterns and musical concepts and relating them to standard patterns of that type.*
