Catalog Course Description

Introduces concept-based curriculum as well as requires students to demonstrate competency in pharmacology, math competency for medication administration, physical appraisal, and application of the nursing process. NOTE: Required for students registered and admitted into the LPN-RN Advanced Program as it begins the process of assimilation into the second semester of the nursing program.

  1. Introduction to the nursing process and the concept-based curriculum.
  2. ANA standards of professional Nursing Practice.
  3. Physical appraisal of the adult client.
  4. Math for medication dosages.
  5. Pharmacological principles

  1. Describe the major components of a concept based curriculum.
  2. Identifies the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice.
  3. Applies principles of critical thinking and evidence-based practice by implementing all phases of the nursing process.*
  4. Demonstrates proficiency in basic pharmacological therapies, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, dosage calculation, and legal and ethical nursing responsibilities associated with medication administration.
  5. Demonstrates proficiency in physical appraisal skills.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory.

  • To receive a satisfactory grade, students will attend all classes; complete a satisfactory nursing care plan, nursing assessment, and pharmacology data sheet.
  • A score of an 80% must be achieved on a nursing department pharmacology exam.
  • Dosage calculations proficiency is achieved by passing the required exam with a minimum score of 90%.
  • Health assessment and physical appraisal skills are assessed through a competency exam in the nursing lab.
  • Nursing process and concept based curriculum proficiency is assessed by written exam with a minimum passing score of 80%.
