Catalog Course Description

An unpaid internship which provides paralegal students with the opportunity to apply classroom knowledge to “real-world” situations by experiencing meaningful legal work in a professional setting. Students engage directly with lawyers and other legal professionals to gain work experience directly related to their paralegal studies major.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Professional Ethics
    • Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior in a legal work environment.
  2. Learning Objectives
    • Prepare personalized learning objectives and perform professional activities that meet each objective.
  3. Paralegal Work-Product
    • Perform work and assigned tasks in a manner commensurate with a professional paralegal.
  4. Time Management
    • Develop time management and billing skills in a manner similar to methods commonly used in a law office.
  5. Portfolio
    • Create a portfolio of sample legal documents for use in searching for a paralegal position, while protecting client confidentiality.
  6. Self Assessment
    • Complete and document self-assessments of performance at the internship.

Assessment of Academic Achievement

Students will be required to:

  1. Prepare personalized learning objectives.
  2. Maintain and submit a Daily Log of work using standard billing practices.
  3. Prepare a Final Report assessing performance.
