Catalog Course Description

An introductory course for students in the Community Leadership program. Acquaints individuals with community organizations, social change, and the social history of metro Detroit since 1950. This course is a pre-requisite to the other required course in the Community Leadership program.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Community Leadership and Organization
    • Describe the foundation of public service and change, including the distinctions between social work, political organization and community organization.
    • Describe key aspects of community leadership, including social needs, problems, initiatives, resources and coalitions.
    • Describe the skills and characteristics of effective community leaders, organizers, and change agents.
    • Describe the training, education, and career opportunities for community leaders and organizers.
  2. Overview of the Social History and Social Movements in Metro Detroit
    • Describe the key contemporary issues facing Metro Detroit today.
    • Describe the key historical events and developments in change initiatives regarding labor, gender, racial and ethnic groups, LGBT and social justice in Metro Detroit.
  3. Information and Communication
    • Describe the role of information gathering for community organizing.
    • Describe communication methods for community organizing.
    • Explain the role of the mass media.
