Catalog Course Description

This course provides the student an opportunity to apply in simulated settings concepts learned throughout the respiratory therapist program. Students spend time working on computerized clinical case study simulations, selecting appropriate patient information, and managing patients.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Describe the initial ventilator settings for post-operative patients with and without prior pulmonary disease.
  2. Discuss weaning of patients requiring post-operative ventilator support.
  3. List the initial ventilator settings in obstructive and restrictive lung disease patients requiring acute application of mechanical ventilation.
  4. Discuss the monitoring and weaning of chronic pulmonary disease patients from mechanical ventilation.
  5. Discuss the treatment regimens for neonatal and pediatric disorders commonly encountered by the respiratory therapist.
  6. Evaluate all patient data to determine the appropriateness of a prescribed respiratory care plan.
  7. Modify a prescribed respiratory care plan to achieve desired patient outcomes.
  8. Develop respiratory care plans in a variety of settings (eg. Protocols).

Assessment will be based on assignments, computer simulation assignments, and course exams.

General Course Requirements and Recommendations

This course must be passed with a "C" or better to remain in the RTH program.
