Laboratory course designed to prepare students for clinical externship. Students will continue to practice aseptic and sterile techniques used in the perioperative care of the surgical patient. This course focuses on skills developed in SRG-140 and incorporates "mock surgery" and advanced clinical skills in a lab setting. Students practice techniques in a guided lab setting.

Demonstrate an understanding of aseptic techniques used in surgery while performing lab skills.
Demonstrate room preparation and set up for a surgical procedure.
Demonstrate a skin prep and catheterization.
Demonstrate proper scrubbing, gowning, and gloving of self.
Demonstrate proper technique for gowning and gloving other team members.
Demonstrate the proper draping and preparation of the mayo stand, back table, and ring stand for a surgical procedure.
Demonstrate the proper draping of the surgical patient.
Demonstrate the proper Identification, handling, and passing of basic surgical instruments for a surgical procedure.
Demonstrate all necessary counts for a surgical procedure.
Demonstrate the proper cleaning and dressing of a surgical wound at the conclusion of surgery.
Demonstrate the proper breakdown of the sterile field and removal of your gown and gloves at the conclusion of a surgical procedure.
Demonstrate briefing and debriefing as related to surgical procedures.
Assessment and Requirements
Students will be assessed based on their performance in each of the identified areas of practice. Students must complete each unit with a passing grade to satisfactorily complete the course. There will be a cumulative timed final lab practical and students must earn a passing grade on the final lab practical to complete this course.
- Students must pass this course with a “C” or better grade to remain in the Surgical Technologist Program.
- Students must follow all classroom/clinical policies described in the most current Surgical Technologist Program Student Handbook.
- Students are required to wear HFC navy scrubs for all SRG lab classes.
