Catalog Course Description

Provides the theoretical knowledge and the time for skill development for persons interested in becoming welders qualified by the American Welding Society (AWS ). Topics include procedures in setup, welding, electrodes, and information about the AWS test. Students are required to wear clothing appropriate to a welding environment. It is also recommended that the student bring a pair of slip-joint pliers. NOTE: Course topics help students prepare for the AWS test, but the exam is not included in this course.

Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
  1. Explain the safety issues and science of welding pipe and pressure vessels.
  2. Prepare correctly, and fit up a steel pipe for welding.
  3. Demonstrate a weld using steel pipe in G6 position (45 degrees) using the SMAW, if on the Pipe Certification track.*
  4. Demonstrate a weld using a heavy duty plate in the vertical up and overhead positions using the SMAW process, if on the Plate Certification track.*
  5. Explain the metallurgy of a multi-pass weldment.
  6. Select the proper electrode used in the certification process.
  7. Explain the AWS certification testing procedures.*

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
All students will be required to complete a set of competencies and tests, and will successfully complete the course by earning a cumulative average grade of 70% or greater.
