Catalog Course Description

Introduces the basic tools, safety protocols, and technical information required by the skilled trades. Includes non-precision and precision measurement tools and methods, layout tools and techniques, hand and bench tools, drills and drilling machines, principles of metal cutting and metal cutting saws, pedestal grinders, and various manufacturing processes.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Shop safety, basic measurement, squares, and surface plates.
  2. Basic and semi-precision layout.
  3. Vernier calipers, height gages, and other calipers.
  4. Physics of metal cutting, machinability, and metal cutting saws.
  5. Outside micrometers and transfer instruments.
  6. Grinding wheels, pedestal grinders, and off-hand grinders.
  7. Inside micrometers, depth micrometers, depth gages, and dial gages.
  8. Drilling machines, drills, cutting speeds, and feeds.
  9. Hand tools, thread cutting tools, and finishing processes.
  10. Drilling, reaming, tapping, and drilling operations.
  11. Angular measurement.
  12. Gage blocks and precision layout.
  13. Gages and comparison measurement.

    Assessment of Academic Achievement

    All students will be required to complete a set of competencies, work sheets, and tests.  The student will be considered to have completed the course by receiving a cumulative average grade of 70%.

    Calculator Use:  Students are encouraged to bring a calculator to all class sessions.  Any scientific calculator will be sufficient for this course.
