Catalog Course Description

Introduces safe operation of basic machine tools, specifically the horizontal band saw and engine lathe. Precision measurement and lay out techniques are also covered giving students an exploratory experience in early stage manufacturing processes.

Goal Statement

To provide an experience for students to better understand the opportunities and skills essential for successful careers in Machine Tool Technology occupations.

Core Course Topics
  1. General shop safety
    • Demonstrate safe working practices while in any machining environment, including the following: metal cutting safety, lathe safety, sawing safety, measurement and layout safety.
  2. Precision Measurement and Layout
    • Perform basic and precision measurement using a common fraction-inch rule and a zero to one inch micrometer.
    • Use hand and bench tools properly.
  3. Horizontal band saw operation
    • Identify the operation of a horizontal band saw.
    • Set up and operate horizontal band saw, deburr safely and proficiently sawing various size mild steel to blue print specifications.
  4. Engine lathe operation
    • Demonstrate knowledge of standard machine tool movements.
    • Identify the operations of a manual lathe.
    • Describe the function of three hand wheels used to feed the cutting tool.
    • Recognize the function of two types of cuts performed on the lathe.
    • Set up and operate the lathe safely and proficiently, layout, face ends of journals to size, turn journals and chamfers to blue print specifications.
