Catalog Course Description

Offers both theoretical and practical study of basic and intermediate-level vocal technique for a spoken live performance. Explores proper breath and alignment, sound production, articulation, projection, subtext, dialect, and character.

Goals, Topics, and Objectives

Core Course Topics
  1. Active relaxation.

    Demonstrate how to apply active relaxation for spoken vocal presentation.

  2. Deep breathing.

    Demonstrate proper breath control for speaking.

  3. Balanced speaking posture.

    Apply effective speaking posture.

  4. Effective articulation.

    Demonstrate proper articulation.

  5. Basic classical American dialect.

    Recognize and explain the differences between colloquial and elevated speech.

  6. Introduction to IPA.

    Explain the basics of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA).

  7. Using effective inflection.

    Demonstrate dynamic, appropriate inflections and tempo-rhythms.

  8. Introduction to regional stage dialect.

    Apply a basic understanding of stage dialect to at least one dialect.

Assessment and Requirements

Assessment of Academic Achievement
  1. Quizzes to ascertain knowledge of IPA and terminology.
  2. Worksheets allow practice of IPA.
  3. Three (3) vocal exams (entry, midterm and exit) to determine development in each of the developmental areas.
  4. A self-assessment paper to present the student's self-observations and criticisms.
