Introduces the major types of computer generated visual effects utilized in motion pictures, video, and film production for stage and screen effects.
Goals, Topics, and Objectives
Core Course Topics
- PHYSICAL EFFECTS: Stop Motion, Miniatures, Animatronics, Front Projection, Rear Projection, and Matte Painting.
- COMPUTER GENERATED EFFECTS: Animation Basics, Motion Tracking, Bullet Time, 2-D & 3-D Computer Generated Imagery Basics, Compositing.
Core Course Learning Objectives (Separated)
- Identify the major technological methodologies of effects covered in this course.
- Assess the artistic and technical steps necessary to effectively break down and determine feasibility of computer generated visual effect.*
- Design an action plan for achieving a number of desired computer generated effects.
- Assess the artistic and technical steps necessary to effectively break down and determine feasibility of physical special effects.
- Design an action plan for achieving a number of physical special effects.*
Assessment and Requirements
Assessment of Academic Achievement
- Objective Quizzes.
- Midterm: Demonstrate practical application of a least 4 effect techniques covered in this class through the production of four 20-second video clips.
- Objective Final Exam.
- A Final Project: Write a presentation treatment (more than 3, less than 30 pages, average 7-12) for a film utilizing at least eight effect techniques covered in class.
