Program Description

Description

Introduces the fundamentals of natural gas distribution and maintenance. Safety, proper excavation procedures, corrosion and pipe protection, gas leaks, mechanical joining, service line repairs and renewals, and main repair and fitting, as well as general knowledge of the gas process from well-head to burner-tip.

Program Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, students should be able to:

  1. Identify and demonstrate the use of personal protective equipment.
  2. Demonstrate the use of specific job-related hand tools.
  3. Identify basic material while following manufacturer's instructions for institutions.
  4. Demonstrate effective communication skills, positive attitudes, problem solving, strategies for coping with challenging and dissatisfied customers, retention of customers, methods of measuring customer satisfaction, technology and customer service, and motivational techniques.
  5. Demonstrate work on residential and light commercial gas, oil, and electric forced-air and hot-water heating systems and related equipment.
Career Opportunities

Entry level gas operations positions such as gas distribution, field service operator/staker/pressure department.


Occupational Exposure/Risk

Exposure to identify probable gas-related hazards and occupational hazards (loss of life, loss of property, injury to employee or customer).

Admission Requirements and Eligibility

Students must apply for entry into the Power and Trades Pathways Pre-Apprenticeship: Natural Gas Distribution and Maintenance certificate. Applications to the program are available in the School of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Professional Development Office. Students undecided of which Pre-Apprenticeship program they may be interested in should select the Power and Trades Pathways Core Certificate and meet with a subject matter expert in the School of Business, Entrepreneurship, and Professional Development.
