Program Description

Language courses fulfill requirements or elective options in many HFC programs as well as programs at four-year institutions. Our courses (except ARA-130) transfer to most colleges and universities. The World Languages Department consistently offers:

  • Four semesters of American Sign Language, Modern Standard Arabic, and Spanish
  • Three semesters of French and German
  • Two semesters of Mandarin Chinese and Italian
  • A Deaf Studies Certificate

The first class in each language sequence is designed for students with no previous experience. All courses not only develop listening, speaking, writing, and reading abilities, but also an understanding of U.S. and global communities and cultures. Each course is aligned with the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languageā€™s proficiency standards for second-language learning. Textbook-based assignments and activities are complimented by in-class oral practice, group work, and a variety of technologies, media, and other supplementary materials.
