Program Description
Description
Provides an understanding of the Spanish language and Hispanic cultures and develops the communicative and intercultural competences integral to actively participating in a diverse global society. The Spanish Studies Certificate of Achievement prepares students to reach the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language’s Intermediate Mid proficiency level, at which speakers can successfully handle everyday communicative tasks. Graduates wishing to pursue higher levels of proficiency may transfer most if not all of the course work.
Program Learning Outcomes
- Initiate, conduct and terminate context-specific conversations with Spanish-speakers at American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language’s Intermediate Mid level
- Interpret written and spoken from authentic sources at the Intermediate Mid level
- Synthesize multiple Spanish-language sources and produce formal and informal audiovisual and textual presentational materials
- Distinguish and explain linguistic and cultural differences among Spanish-speaking communities
- Compare and contrast American mainstream culture with a variety of Spanish-speaking cultures
