Course Goals

This course is designed to instill in the student a heightened level of visual awareness and to develop fundamental drawing skills as well as an understanding of basic drawing concepts.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

Recognize and identify the basic materials used in a college level drawing class.

Create a body of work that emphasizes the use of contour lines.

Create a body of work that emphasizes the expressive qualities of line.

Create a multi-step value scale and a continuous value scale with seamlessly modulated transitions.

Demonstrate ability to assess composition within drawing through the use of a viewfinder.

Demonstrate an understanding of sighting and its use in the pursuit of correct perspective.

Illustrate an understanding of linear perspective by creating a drawing of three-dimensional structures with construction lines, object lines, horizon line and vanishing points all indicated.

Demonstrated competence with axes and ellipses by drawing bottles, stemware and similar cylinder forms.

Indicate aces and ellipses with construction lines as well as contour and object lines.

Demonstrate competence in constructing basic forms without either object lines or construction lines by using the hatching, cross hatching, and other textural techniques.

Demonstrate competence in constructing using charcoal as a tonal instrument to convey the illusion of mass using gradients of value.

Define and utilize the vocabulary that relates to a beginning level college drawing class.

Discuss and interpret how drawing has been used by both contemporary and historical artists and assess how one's own work fits in.
