Introductory Statistics Skills

MathematicsScience, Tech, Engr & Math

Course Goals

To provide needed just-in-time mathematical support for students who have not met the prerequisite for course. There will be an emphasis on reading, problem solving, and writing skills throughout the course as they are needed in the practice of statistics.

Core Course Topics

  1. Numbers and the Number Line

    1. Plot points and intervals on the number line

    2. Represent an inequality as an interval on the number line

    3. Find the distance between two points on the number line

    4. Find the midpoint between two points on the number line

    5. Round decimals

    6. Order decimal numbers

    7. Convert numbers between scientific and standard notation

    8. Convert between fractions, decimals, and percents

  2. Operations on Numbers

    1. Perform signed numbers arithmetic

    2. Calculate powers of a numbers using technology

    3. Calculate the square root of a number (using technology)

    4. Use summation notation

    5. Use order of operations in expressions and formulas

  3. Sets

    1. Use set notation

    2. Use Venn diagrams

    3. Find the complement of a set

    4. Find the union and the intersection of two sets

  4. Equations and Inequalities

    1. Evaluate algebraic expressions

    2. Solve a linear equation in one variable

  5. Graphing Points and Lines in the Cartesian Coordinate System

    1. Plot ordered pairs (x, y) in the rectangular coordinates system

    2. Understand the slope as the change in y associated with a 1-unit change in x.

    3. Find the slope of a line given two points or the graph

    4. Identify and interpret slope as a rate of change

    5. Write the equation of the line in slope-intercept form

    6. Given the equation of the line, draw the graph of the line

    7. Using the equation of the line, find the y-value associated with a given x-value.

    8. Find a vertical distance between a point and a line

  6. Reading Tables and Graphs and Approximating Areas

    1. Extract information from tables and graphs

    2. Given the total area under a curve or a histogram, approximate the area of a shaded region.
